Professor Srikanta Chatterjee is an Emeritus Professor of Economics in the School of Economics and Finance of Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand. Prior to his retirement in 2011, Professor Chatterjee had held a Personal Chair in economics in this department since 1995, having taught here since 1981.  He has also lived and worked in Australia, India, Fiji, Japan and the UK, and been a visiting academic in a number of other countries. His areas of teaching have been micro- and macroeconomic theory, international economics, international finance, international business, development economics, public sector economics, taxation and the economies of New Zealand and the Asia-pacific. His research and publications have covered a wide variety of areas including international economics, applied demand analysis, income distribution and inequality, comparative perspectives on the Indian and Chinese economic performance, issues of India’s food and nutrition security, economic performance of the Asia-Pacific economies and the economic reform of New Zealand.

 

After retirement, Professor Chatterjee has widened his studies and research to include international relations, security, geopolitics and geo-economics, political and cultural history of India and the lives and works of eminent personalities of the Indian renaissance. He has been addressing lectures and seminars and publishing in these subjects.

In addition to the regular engagements in the  professional areas of economics and related  disciplines as  alluded to above, Professor Chatterjee, since his formal retirement from the university, has been participating in various general-interest gatherings and visiting academic institutions around the world to  speak mainly on India-related subjects such as ‘Swami Vivekananda and the Indian Renaissance’;  ‘Rabindranath Tagore’s Educational Ideas’; ‘India as a Potential Superpower’, ‘Caste-politics and India’s General Election Results 2014’ and ‘Aspects of India’s Cultural Heritage’. In October 2016, several Japanese Universities observed the centenary of the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore’s first of five visits to Japan. As part of these observations, Professor Chatterjee accepted invitations to visit Sophia University in Tokyo and the University of Tokyo to meet with Japanese scholars and students with an interest in Tagore’s life and works and to speak on the poet’s educational philosophy and practices. He was also interviewed by the Bengali Language Service of Radio Japan. He exchanged ideas with the interviewer on the cultural and societal changes in Bengal and around the Indian subcontinent in general.
