Associate Professor Karen Hoare

Currently Karen is involved in research projects that ask  young people about how information on sexually transmitted infections should be disseminated. Karen is a co-investigator on the HRC programme grant investigating whether paracetamol or ibuprofen treatment in the first year of life increses the incidence of asthma at aged 6 years.

One of her main interests is an initiative to build support for children's nursing in the Wetern Pacific. She is collaborating with staff from the University of Cape Town's Child Nurse Practice Development Initiative and James Cook University's Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research, around this initiative.

Karen is a member of the World Universities Network funded project examining child migration.

Karen Hoare is a Nurse Practitioner for Children and Young People and works in partnership with six general practitioners in South Auckland, New Zealand. She has researched and implemented models of care into general practice that case managed infants, children and young people. She leads the school based collaboration between Greenstone Family Clinic and Counties Manukau DHB, which works with school nurses in Manurewa. Karen trained as a children’s nurse at Great Ormond Street hospital, London, and then as a Health Visitor, before immigrating to New Zealand. She has lived and worked in South and West Africa and in Peru.
