My research is concentrated in three main areas. These include gastrointestinal nematodes of ruminants (sheep, cattle and red deer) with particular regard to issues around achieving sustainable parasite control in the face of anthelmintic resistance. I have an interest in: using activity parameters as a proxy to determine the effects of parasitism on livestock; the impact of liver fluke on milk production in the New Zealand context;diagnostic approaches towards anthelmintic resistance; usefulness of some management procedures for achieving good parasite control with reduced anthelmintic use; answering the query as to how to achieve the benefits of increased milk yield in dairy cows associated with parasite control but without the use of anthelmintics. Other areas include: flystrike on sheep and how we can better model these parasites to obtain better risk evalulation; the epidemiology of apicomplexan protozoa especially Neospora, Toxoplasma and coccidia in the New Zealand context and more recently, following the recent identification of Theileria orientalis in New Zealand, my interests now include the impact of this on animal health of cattle in New Zealand. I also have an interest in parasites of wildllife in New Zealand, most recently apicomplexan parasites.
