Te Puna Whakatipu is Massey University’s strategic initiatives hub. Our mandate is to create better futures for New Zealand and the world, drawing upon the university’s capability, facilities and knowledge platforms in agriculture, food, health, business and design.

Te Puna Whakatipu means ‘the spring of development’ or the place from which new things can grow. The team’s aim is to create value for individuals, communities and organisations, by:

  • Drawing upon the university’s capability, facilities and knowledge platforms to solve problems for industry
  • Connecting with government, business, industry and communities
  • Hosting pan-university initiatives
  • Providing university-level leadership of Massey's agrifood business strategy, FoodHQ and our sustainability strategy
  • Helping staff develop and test new ideas

We will help you find the best way to deliver a better future for New Zealand, based on your expertise. The outcome might be a new strategic initiative, a new research programme or the development of a new commercial opportunity.

We work with you to:

  • Find out how to make your idea a reality
  • Test ‘proof of concept’
  • Connect with the Massey service units who can help
  • Engage effectively with industry

Prof Selwyn Katene

Director - Global Centre for Indigenous Leadership

OIUR - Te Puna Whakatipu

Professor Selwyn Katene is the Director of the Global Centre for Indigenous Leadership, an international network of tertiary institutions interested in advancing indigenous leadership capability, governance, knowledge, and practice to improve indigenous peoples' outcomes worldwide. The Massey University-led Global Centre will involve inter-disciplinary teams of indigenous experts from across the globe collaborating to design and deliver initiatives that incorporate research, teaching, consultancy and advisory services, engagements, governance training, policy formulation and programme development to advance indigenous leadership. The Centre's vision is to create better futures for indigenous peoples as a valued world leader of indigenous leadership, knowledge and practice excellence. Its mission as a global network will be to accelerate indigenous leadership capability, empower indigenous peoples, and transform their communities for the greater good. Taking the best of the consortium's offerings (reputation, technical expertise, knowledge and skills) to the world's indigenous peoples will be the point of difference for the Global Centre.

Dr Katene has had wide managerial and governance expertise including being a board member of a number of Maori trusts, and runanga, health and social service organisations, and the Capital & Coast District Health Board, His main research interests are Maori governance and leadership, health and education public policy development, and Iwi / Maori history., and religion.

Dr Katene has published a number of articles and books on leadership including: The Spirit of Maori Leadership (2013); Future Challenges for Maori (2013); Turning the Hearts of the Children (2014) and, Fire That Kindles Hearts (2015). 

His tribal affiliations are Ngati Toa, Ngati Tuwharetoa, Ngaruahine, and Ngati Tama.

Selwyn Katene is Professor of Maori and Indigenous Leadership and Director of the Global Centre for Indigenous Leadership at Massey University. Prior to that he was Assistant Vice Chancellor, Maori and Pasifika at Massey University and also the Director of MANU AO Leadership Academy, hosted by Massey University. Dr Katene was General Manager of the Mental Health Commission, Group Manager, Public Health in the Ministry of Health, Group Director, in the Public Health Commission, and held various  marketing positions in the pharmaceutical industry. He has a BA, BA (Hons), MA,  MPM from Victoria University, and a doctorate from Massey University.
