When is the application deadline?

Applications are due by 15 March. We begin processing applications on a first come, first served basis prior to the application deadline.  It is to your advantage to apply early since the program may fill before the deadline.

What is the application process?

We will need your application, resume, and Internship Placement Form.  This form will help us place you with the most appropriate organisation for your internship and give your site host some additional information about your skills and background.

What are the admission requirements?

  • Completion of one year of university-level study
  • Actively pursuing a degree in a related major
  • Completion of two classes at the 200 level in a related major
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent
  • Permission from your home university

Students from a country where English is not the first language must meet the English language requirements.

Can the courses I take during my Spring semester count toward the Entry Requirements?

You must apply for the programme and meet all of the entry requirements by the 15 March application deadline.  An official transcript from your home university is a required part of your application.  Any courses not listed on your transcript cannot be counted toward the entry requirements.  This includes any courses you are taking during the Spring semester.

Are the majors listed for each track the only majors you’ll accept?

This program is aimed at students who are studying or have a background in the specific topic.  The majors we’ve listed are the best fits, but these aren't the only majors we will consider.  For example, Disaster Risk and Emergency Management has health care placements for Nursing and Pre-Med majors.  Please ask if you are unsure if we will consider your major to be related.

How much does it cost and what is included?

The programme fee is NZ $8,503.  You can hover over the fee to see the current exchange rate.  The fee includes

  • Tuition and non-tuition fees
  • Health and travel insurance
  • Accommodation
  • Course-related activities and excursions
  • Welcome and farewell dinner and breakfasts during the National Expedition
  • Online pre-departure orientation
  • Pick-up from airport (based on which program you choose)
  • Internship placement
  • Internet access during internship

Are there any big items not included in the fee?

Your international flights and most meals are the only large items not included in the fee.  Once you arrive, all your domestic travel on the program, accommodation, and internet access are included in the fee.  You will want to budget for a few things like personal travel on the weekends (because New Zealand is an amazingly beautiful country and you definitely want to get out and see more of it), personal items, souvenirs, and a phone if you’ll want one.

Do you offer a scholarship?

Yes!  You are welcome to apply for a NZ $500 Explore New Zealand scholarship.  One is available for each National Expedition and Internship track.  If you win, we will put these funds toward lowering your tuition.

When do I purchase my flights?

We will confirm your place on the programme on 23 March. Your formal acceptance and payment are due at this time. We will send you a Receipt of payment once we receive your acceptance and payment. You can book your flights after you receive your Confirmation of Place.

Please do not purchase your flights before 23 March.

Do I need to apply for a visitor visa or a student visa?

Citizens of the United States and other visa-waiver countries can enter New Zealand and participate in the summer program on a visitor visa.   You will also need to apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority.  You do not have to apply for a student visa because of the short duration of the program.

Check with Immigration New Zealand to determine which visa will best fit your situation if you are not from a visa-waiver country.

How are the credits going to be awarded?

You will be enrolled in two separate courses during the program, one for the National Expedition and the other for the Internship.  Both courses together are worth 30 Massey University credits, which equate to 6 - 8 U.S. semester credits, 15 ECTS, or 30 CATS.

When will I receive my transcript?

Your transcript will be issued in mid-December. We will send your transcript to your home university or third-party provider if you came through a study abroad organisation. This will happen automatically. You do not need to request a transcript. The cost of this service is included in your program fee.

Why does your online system show these classes as happening in semester 1 rather than during the summer?

This program is aligned with the Northern Hemisphere summer, which falls during our semester 1. The summer semester in New Zealand runs from November to February.

Why do the online descriptions of these classes show two different sets of dates?

The academic portion of the courses open before you arrive in New Zealand.  This allows you to see the readings and activities early and will provide you with access to Stream, our online learning platform.  The classes will be kept open after you return home so you can access the materials after the programme ends.

The dates you see in the brochure and on our website are the dates the practical portion of the program takes place here in New Zealand.
