Experiencing international assignment: An exploratory study of Chinese international assignees”
Christian investigated international experience of Chinese assignees working for multinational companies in different cultural contexts. Using an integrated, multi-dimensional theoretical framework incorporating motivation, experience and career capital, his study found the decision-making is a multi-faceted, complex and interdependent process involving a balance of individual, organisational and social factors. Moreover, his study outlined the dynamic and multi-dimensional nature of international experience. The findings offered new insights to the career literature showing that while Chinese international assignees appreciate the international experience, in contrast to much of the Western literature, they consider it has little impact on their future careers. This was explained largely in terms of cultural factors, as well as the particular nature of Chinese multinational companies. His proposed contextual model provided useful implications for future research such as comparative studies of international assignees from different cultures or assignees on different types of international assignments. He has since published research articles in several international journals and presented at various conferences.
Christian also shared his experience of conducting doctoral research at Massey University: “Studying at Massey gave me an opportunity to interact with the best researchers in the HR field and I especially enjoyed the cross-disciplinary and innovative research initiatives that Massey promotes. I hope my research findings will help New Zealand businesses understand the culturally diverse workplace and increase their global competitiveness”. He is now a Senior Lecturer in the School of Management at Victoria University of Wellington (NZ).
