Metagenomics Day

Metagenomics Day is an incredible opportunity for you and your students to come and experience research in a university laboratory!

Massey University is holding practical science days for Year 12 and Year 13 high school students on our Auckland and Manawatū campuses.

The day will give students a unique hands-on experience with the molecular biology techniques that underpin DNA sequencing of environmental samples.

What will you(or your students) do?

  • Extract DNA from soil
  • Perform a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
  • Run your PCR on an agarose gel to visualize the DNA you extracted and amplified
  • Do some bioinformatics on previous years’ data to identify bacteria present in environmental samples from soil.

Students will also get the opportunity to socialise with and listen to short lectures about molecular biology, genetics, and current research from leading scientists at Massey University.

Date and venue

  • Massey University, Albany, Auckland
  • Massey University, Palmerston North, Manawatū

When: 28 September 2019
