Massey mentors for success

Massey was approached by a major food product manufacturer, which was looking for advice on implementing a continuous performance improvement culture into its two New Zealand factories.

A series of two-day workshops, which was delivered over a year, was designed to teach Team Leaders and Process Centre Managers (PCMs) the tools, techniques and philosophies of continuous improvement underpinning total quality management, lean and six sigma.

These tools were then systematically applied in a series of industrially based improvement projects undertaken within each Process Centre. The projects served to augment the training, provided an opportunity to apply the theoretical tools, and provided live examples and data to be used during the workshops. This also promoted internal process knowledge and organisational learning during the workshops. The projects were mentored by Massey University staff as necessary.

This process was overseen by an internal continuous improvement champion, supported by a funded Massey University research student to ensure expert advice and continuity of the programme both during and beyond the workshops.

The programme achieved a number of key benefits, including reductions in fill variability, downtime and other areas of waste, inefficiency and cost.
