The School of English and Media Studies offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and courses in English, Media studies, Creative writing, Public and professional writing, Theatre studies and Expressive arts.
Our aim is to help you develop excellent analytical, practical, and creative skills that you can apply in any career path, enhancing your social engagement and your life as a whole. The School of English and Media Studies is unique because it offers a combination of critical and creative opportunities. The study options we offer will cultivate your knowledge of literary and media texts, film and cultural theory, theatre and expressive arts, creative writing, public and professional writing, and communication. Besides introducing you to some of the great pleasures of engaging with complex as well as popular cultural texts and artefacts, our courses aim to enable you to link your intellectual analysis with both creative and practical production. Our courses are taught by accomplished international scholars and award-winning teachers and combine a range of options with a welcoming and personal approach. Many of our classes include forms of tutorial and workshop-based small-group teaching, where your tutor will recognise your own particular academic strengths and needs.

The School of English and Media Studies has state of the art facilities at our Manawatū, Wellington and Auckland campuses. From the latest high-definition videocameras and DSLRs, to fully-equipped studio theatre spaces, sound recording suites, and media labs utilising industry-standard software packages such as Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro, the School of English and Media Studies has the tools and spaces our students need to create cutting-edge creative work in the digital age.
We hold regular events on each campus that provide our students with plenty of opportunity to practice their new skills.
