199.211 Invertebrate Zoology (15 credits)

A largely marine-based course that introduces the spectacular diversity amongst invertebrates. An appreciation of the major phyla is gained through learning about their diversity, anatomy, feeding, ecology and reproduction. Practical work focuses on identifying invertebrates, their morphology, and how they function.

Learning outcomes Details

Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:

  1. Recognise, identify and give the primary classification of representatives of major invertebrate groups.
  2. Describe and visually record their basic external and internal structure.
  3. Identify the functions of external and internal structures, and relate form to function.
  4. Describe how invertebrates move, feed, excrete, perceive their environment, and reproduce, and discuss their ecological roles and their importance to humans and wildlife.
  5. Explain the general principles that provide context for understanding the biology of invertebrates.
