Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Human Resource Management)

Employment Relations Consultant (People and Capability) - Auckland Regional Council

“Though I have been in Human Resources for a long time, one is never too old to learn…”

I have been working in human resources for 20 years and it seemed like a good time to do some further study.

I had a lot of encouragement from my managers. It was my manager at my then workplace - the Aviation Security Service - who encouraged me to start this graduate diploma in human resource management as part of my professional development. When I changed roles and went to the Wairau Road PAK’nSAVE as human resources manager, the owner-operator encouraged me to continue my study. I attended lectures rather than study extramurally and enjoyed the ‘school room’ based learning. It was quite motivating and I could use my work as examples in class and understand and comprehend the learning to practice ratio.

I loved the study and found it not too hard considering it had been a long time since I last studied. I did struggle a bit with writing academically at first but the student help centre gave me really good suggestions which helped me achieve the grades I did. I think too that as I am working in the field of study, this was relevant learning which I could apply to my job.

As a mature student I found interacting with the younger students not only helped me with my study, but helped me in my work in human resources.

Though I have been in Human Resources for a long time, one is never too old to learn! The very first paper, Organisational Behaviour, really helped me understand the complexities of the workplace as I have worked in larger private and government departments

Eventually I would like to become an employer consultant for small to medium businesses as I feel support for them is lacking in New Zealand.

Careers

For those already working in the field, the diploma will give you additional skills and bring you up-to-date on theory and practice. It may also be useful if you have found yourself in a role outside of your key area of specialty and wish to up-skill.
