This unique qualification is New Zealand’s only degree focused solely on the retail sector. It was created in response to a demand from employers for qualified graduates with sound managerial skills and retail industry knowledge.
The fast-paced retail industry has many facets – from supply chain to buying and brand management, logistics to law, management to marketing. With advances in technology, the retail environment is ever-evolving and businesses are constantly seeking skilled leaders who can meet changing consumer demands.
In Massey’s Bachelor of Retail and Business Management (BRBM) you will learn broad-based business skills with retail-specific expertise. It is designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in the sector or in general business management.
You will learn best-practice approaches for retail in New Zealand and abroad, in both physical and virtual environments.
You will also gain knowledge of retail-related disciplines such as logistics and supply chain management, retail design, combined with an understanding of the evolution of technology, consumer behaviour and visual merchandising within the sector.
The multi-billion dollar retail sector is New Zealand’s second-largest for employment, responsible for seamlessly and endlessly delivering goods and services to New Zealanders. The BRBM was created in response to a demand from employers for qualified graduates with sound managerial skills and retail industry knowledge.
You’ll initially study a broad range of business courses and learn about retail fundamentals. You’ll then move to learning more about specifics of retail management and marketing. In your final year you can choose to specialise in a specific aspect of retail.
The uniqueness of this degree is in its specific retail-focused courses. Topics you can study include retail buying and planning, merchandising, strategy and business planning and retail operations, both in a store and online context.
The course gives you access to Massey University’s wide expertise in this area. Your teachers include world-renowned researchers in retail issues in consumer behaviour, branding, design, human resources, retail marketing activities, advertising effectiveness and logistics and supply chain operation.

“I had talked to Massey graduates and they spoke really highly of their time there and the Massey Business School in particular. I loved that Massey seemed serious enough to do the job well, but relaxed enough to enjoy the process…”
Straight out of school I started studying a Bachelor of Business Studies. One year in, it came time to choose my major and that is when I found the Bachelor of Retail and Business Management (BRBM). It was perfect for me - my family had just bought a supermarket that we were all passionate about, and studying retail was my way to contribute.
The BRBM stood out to me because of its close connection with the industry, the balance between practical and theoretical learning, and the opportunities it offered through meet-and-greets, guest speakers and credited internships. As well as this, all of the papers were offered both internally and via distance learning, giving me the flexibility to fit my studies around my work and lifestyle.
What I’ve enjoyed the most are the guest lectures. We’ve had experts from most areas of retail speak to us.
In my final year I got the opportunity to shadow one of The Warehouse Group’s executive team for a day after receiving the Stephen Small Academic Achievement Award. This experience is what inspired me to jump into a career in the corporate side of retail.
After my final semester I was accepted into the New Zealand Food and Grocery Council's internship programme then secured a graduate position with Foodstuffs as a Category Assistant.
During school I didn’t consider working in retail or in corporate roles, but now I’ve found my place in both and am excited to play my part in the ever-changing retail industry."
Massey’s integrative approach ensures you will graduate with generic business skills as well as retail-specific expertise. You will have gained the critical thinking and problem-solving skills to design, implement and continuously improve strategies for dynamic retail, technological and economic environments.
The Bachelor of Retail and Business Management is specifically focused on helping develop future managers and/or leaders in retailing. The degree is specifically tailored for the retail sector’s requirements, so the skills you will learn are those that the retail sector is seeking for their management staff.
You will be prepared to take on management and leadership roles in areas such as marketing, merchandising, logistics, human resources, supply chain management or design and brand management.
Alternatively, the Bachelor of Retail and Business Management provides an excellent platform for those thinking about setting up their own business or enterprise.
An internship component at each level of the Bachelor of Business and Retail Management programme will allow you to create strong industry connections and will expose you to a range of real-world retail experiences.
“Like many, I had a fear that after years of hard work, I would struggle to find job after graduating or settle in an area that was far from what I was passionate about. However, the internship opportunities in the BRBM have totally wiped that for me! Starting as an employment brand intern for The Warehouse group this year, I was able to work in an accommodating yet challenging environment with industry professionals on interesting projects that only enhanced and extend my learning from campus. I can honestly, hand on heart, say I feel so much more capable and confident as I prepare for an exciting career after graduating from Massey University!”
“My time participating with the BRBM internships have been extremely eye opening. I have had the rare opportunity to see the retail industry in its entirety; and from the perspective of different retailers. I have been at the forefront with customers, behind the scenes learning some warehousing skills and even been a part of corporate teams working on projects. The internships have not only been a major catalyst for the growth of my workplace skills, making me more employable and confident in my own abilities, but is also an impressive feature to have on my CV. Ultimately, this will result in me to being able to separate myself from other job candidates when my university journey is over.”
“Retail is a fast moving innovative business, which requires a wide range of skills and capability and needs to attract the best talent available. The retail degree is& a critical development. Retail is also very practical and internship experience is a vital part of the degree, which helps produce the rounded graduates the industry needs.”
Mark Powell, CEO in Residence, Massey Business School (and former CEO of the Warehouse Group)
