Whakaoranga Whanau: A Whanau Resilience Framework

While the characteristics under-pinning resilient families have been well documented in Western literature, those of resilient Maori families are less understood. Mr Waiti investigated the characteristics of resilient whanau, with a particular emphasis on the cultural customs, concepts, and behaviours that enable Maori whanau to bounce back from adversity. He developed a Whanau Resilience Framework which consists of four resilience platforms. These are whanaungatanga, pukenga, tikanga and tuakiri-a-iwi. His research highlighted both the synergies and dissonance between Maori and non-Maori perspectives of resilience, and how cultural factors might best guide Maori whanau.
