A New Zealand study of self employed registered nurses: non traditional work in non traditional settings
This research study aims to explore, using focused ethnography, the experiences of New Zealand registered nurses, with current practising certificates, who have moved away from the traditional nursing role of direct care provider into nursing professional advice and policy as self-employed business owners providing contracted services to the health sector.
I completed my initial registered nurse training in Cornwall, England. I worked in New Zealand and Saudi Arabia before eventually returning to New Zealand. I have been a self-employed Health Workforce Consultant and business owner for six years, working predominantly on national projects in the nursing profession. I completed my Master of Philosophy (Nursing) at Massey in 2006, my subject was work-role transition.
