Mapping what matters in New Zealand museums: stakeholder perspectives on museum performance and accountability.
Dr Legget investigated accountability for non-financial performance in New Zealand ’s publicly funded and professionally managed museums. Her survey of museum directors in these organisations found that visitation data was the key (and often the sole) performance indicator considered for accountability reporting. In contrast, various categories of community stakeholders participating in focus groups and concept mapping exercises consistently prioritised collections (including taonga) and staff - their quality and effective management - as the significant factors when making their assessment of their museum’s performance. This was equally true for Maori and non-Maori participants. Ms Legget expects her findings to assist New Zealand museums to provide more meaningful accountability to their supporting communities.
