Ms Geevika Ganegama Arachchi isolated natural lytic Listeria phages from seafood processing environments in New Zealand and identified three different phages which could kill the foodborne pathogen, L. monocytogenes. The three phages killed L. monocytogenes cells which had been exposed to heat, starvation and salt, on stainless steel in the presence of fish proteins and at low temperatures. These conditions represent those in seafood processing plants. These results indicate that these three phages could be used as an natural alternative to chemical sanitisers for decontaminating seafood processing environments.
