Security - Manawatu

Massey University (Manawatu) caters for approximately 7,500 students and 3,000 staff and visitors during any one day. In fact, the campus is busier than most small towns, so security incidents do occur from time to time.

Massey has an on-campus Security service available 24 hours, 7 days a week. If anyone has concerns or problems relating to personal safety, property theft/damage, suspicious activity, or requires assistance for any reason, Manawatu Security can be contacted at any time on extn 85030 or 350 5030 (DDI line).

Lost Property

All found property should be delivered to Security on Colombo Road, and all lost property should be reported, click here for details.

Police car Police

There is one Community Constable based on campus in the FM Complex on Colombo Road. They can be contacted on extn 85042.

Bicycle Thefts

Bicycles should always be secured to a bicycle rack, preferably by passing a D lock though the frame and rear wheel. The bicycle chain must be on the outside gear before placing in the rack. It is not unusual to have a bicycle stolen even when secured in this manner. Students should avoid bringing expensive mountain bikes to the University. Makes, models, colours and serial numbers should be recorded to assist investigations. Bikes must not be left blocking exits, walkways or against buildings.

General Thefts 

Most thefts of personal items occur in the library, recreation centre and concourse areas. Students should not leave their bags unattended at any time.

Cars and Motorbikes

Vehicles are parked on Massey University property at the owners' risk.  Unlawful interfering and theft of vehicles does occur from time to time.  Vehicles should be secured and all items of value removed from sight.  Halls residents are advised to check their vehicles at regular intervals.  Hopefully, these actions will deter criminals and reduce the number of incidents of this nature.

Hostel Incidents

The main concern in the hostel areas is the theft of personal items from rooms. Rooms must be left secure and expensive personal items should not be brought onto campus.

Where possible, all personal items should be removed from rooms during term breaks. Take commonsense precautions and promptly report any suspicious activity.


Students are reminded that under internal disciplinary regulations any breaches of these regulations could lead to fines, community work, and restitution costs.  Theft of, or damage to University property will not be tolerated.

The Transport Act 1962 applies to all University road and car parks in conjunction with internal regulations (refer to the Parking and Traffic Regulations).

Access Card

Access cards to buildings are issued by the respective departments as required.  The above attachments outline instructions in relation to the use of the system and an application form for new users and alterations to existing cards.

Lost and Found

  1. All Lost or Found Property should be reported to Operations Service Desk (formerly RFMHelpdesk) during Business Hours on ext 82288.  After hours Lost or Found Property should be reported to Security on ext 85030 or 0800 627 750.
  2. Found Property should be delivered to the Operations Service Desk (formerly RFMHelpdesk) in the Facilities Management Complex, Corner of University Ave and Colombo Road.
  3. Lost Property should be reported to the Operations Service Desk (formerly RFMHelpdesk) by calling ext 82288 or by completing the following form:

Hundreds of items are recovered throughout the year and many of these remain unclaimed. For this reason it is important that personal property is clearly named (including lecture notes and assignments).
