The academic year at the International Institute for Japanese Language Education at NUFS consists of two semesters. The Spring Semester begins in mid-March and ends in early-July. The Fall Semester begins in late August and ends in mid-December.
Exchange students enrol in the Global Japan Program at NUFS. The classes have a range of credits they are worth. You need to enrol in 16 credits in order to earn 60 Massey credits. Their wide range of classes are organised into two main subject areas.
Japanese Language Course
You will improve your language skills through courses offered by experiences and highly qualified Japanese language instructors. Beginner through pre-advanced courses are available and classes have a maximum of 12 students. The courses are made up of core language classes and applied skills classes.
Global Japan Studies Course
This course explores Japan from the World Perspective and the World from Japan's Perspective. The classes are categorised into two thematic blocks: Language & Culture and Business & Society. Topics include the heritage and traditional culture of Central Japan, technological innovation, and corporate management.
NUFS offers two types of university-administered accommodation. They are an international student dormitory and university-affiliated apartments.
Nagoya University offers a living allowance of ¥60,000 per month towards your accommodation costs. Check the current exchange rate to see what this will equate to in NZD.
All new International Students must attend a post arrival Orientation. The Orientation may take up to 11 days to complete and will include language tests and all day excursions.
After being admitted, it will be necessary to obtain a student visa before entering Japan. NUFS will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (a visa-supporting document) at the Nagoya Immigration Bureau on your behalf. It normally takes about one to two months for the bureau to issue it. Immediately after NUFS receives the certificate, it will be sent to the mailing address specified on the application form. It is advisable that you contact the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate to obtain further information concerning requirements for your visa application. Each student is responsible for obtaining a Japanese visa prior to departure for Japan.
