Purpose
The Waitawhiti Memorial Postgraduate Scholarship supports postgraduate students in agriculture and horticulture, preferably those from Wairarapa.

Background
This scholarship is supported by a gift from Charles and Margaret Richardson, who farmed at Waitawhiti Station near Eketahuna. The scholarship is in memory of their sons, who both attended Massey Agricultural College. Graham Speedy Richardson was a member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and died in 1944. Paul James Richardson was shot in a farm accident.

Value and tenure
The value of the scholarship is determined each year from the interest earned on the capital. The scholarship is usually offered annually and the tenure is for a single academic year.
At the discretion of the University all, or part, of the annual interest may be reinvested to maintain the value of the capital fund so the scholarship may not be granted each and every year.

Eligibility '
Applicants must be:

-enrolled full time for a postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture or horticulture (prefix of 112, 117, 119, 189, 283, 284 or 285) at Massey University
-New Zealand citizens.

Selection criteria
The selection criterion is academic merit.
Preference is given to residents of Wairarapa.
The University Scholarships Committee may take account of other scholarships and bursaries held by the applicants in seeking an equitable distribution of funds.

Selection panel
The scholarship is awarded by the University Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the Applied Academic Programmes Scholarships Committee.
The University Scholarships Committee has the right to refrain from making an award if there are no suitable applicants and its decision is final.

Conditions of the scholarship
The University Scholarships Committee may withdraw or suspend an award at any time if the recipient fails to make satisfactory academic progress.
The scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships, bursaries or awards, so long as those scholarships, bursaries or awards permit co-tenure.
