Purpose
The George Mason Sustainable Land Use Scholarships were developed in 2011 to encourage postgraduate research at Massey University that will help promote sustainable land use within Taranaki, especially in relation to agriculture, forestry and/or conservation.

Background
This scholarship is funded by the George Mason Charitable Trust. Dr George Mason is a Taranaki philanthropist and retired scientist.

Value and tenure
Scholarships to the maximum value of $25,000 will normally be awarded annually as funds permit.

The scholarships are awarded for one year, but recipients are encouraged to reapply again in subsequent years.

The first payment of the stipend is made in May, followed by equal-sized instalments every two months for a year.

Typical number on offer
The funding may either be given to just one applicant or may be shared across several applicants.

Eligibility
Applicants must:
•be enrolled doctoral or master’s programme at Massey University in studies of topics beneficial to durable resource management as affected by land use, and where the research component of the course will occupy at least the full year.
•be undertaking research relevant to land use within Taranaki.

Preference may be given to those applicants who undertake at least part of their studies in Taranaki.

Selection criteria
In recommending the applicants, the Applied Academic Programmes Scholarships Committee, College of Sciences, will take into account academic merit and other scholarships and bursaries held by the applicants. The main criterion will be how well the research project fits with the objectives of this scholarship, so applicants must make a strong case within their application about how their project is relevant to the sustainable use of land in Taranaki for agriculture, forestry and/or conservation.

Selection panel
Applications are considered by the Applied Academic Programmes Scholarships Committee, which makes a recommendation to the George Mason Charitable Trust for ratification.

The George Mason Charitable Trust has the right to refrain from making an award if there are no suitable applicants and its decision is final.
