New to university study
Level of Study
These scholarships were established to support new students enrolling at Massey University who are undertaking university study for the first time. These scholarships are designed to acknowledge excellence and enable equitable access to study for all students new to Massey undergraduate study.
Māori have distinct status as tangata whenua. Massey recognises other groups of learners where there is a need to improve equity outcomes, including
•Students with physical, learning or sensory disabilities
•Students from low socioeconomic backgrounds
•Students from refugee backgrounds
•Students who may be underrepresented because of barriers to access and success
These scholarships are also designed to support students who may be studying at tertiary for the first time as
•first in their family to attend university
•part of a career change or re-skilling
Value and Tenure
Up to 60 full-time and part-time scholarships may be awarded annually. The value of the scholarship shall be $5,000 for full-time students, or $2,500 for part-time students.
The tenure is for three academic years subject to satisfactory academic progress following the award of the scholarship as follows:
•Year One - $3,000 for full time students, and $1,500 for part time students
•Year Two - $1,000 for full time students, and $500 for part time students
•Year Three - $1,000 for full time students, and $500 for part time students.
Recipients will join the Scholars@Massey community. This community offers advice and support on scholar development through activities and events, alongside peer mentoring opportunities. Recipients will also be eligible to apply for a Massey University Foundation Peer Scholar Award in subsequent enrolment periods (i.e., years 2 and 3).

Up to 60 awards
All applicants must be:
•a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
•embarking on undergraduate study at university for the first time
•intending to enrol in the first year of an undergraduate qualification, full time or part time (minimum 30 credit enrolment per semester)
•on the Albany, Manawatu or Wellington campus and/or online
All applicants need to meet the entry criteria for the programme that they intend to enrol in at Massey University.
The selection will be based on:
•a personal statement by the applicant on why they have decided to commence tertiary study and their goals and objectives for tertiary study
•evidence of excellence in study, work, leadership and other factors relevant to their tertiary study goals and that demonstrates potential to excel
•a character reference
Consideration of personal characteristics, including cultural identity, background and experience, will be given to ensure that equity outcomes are achieved.
The University Scholarships Committee is responsible for the awarding of scholarships.
Conditions of the Scholarship
These scholarships are not tenable with the Massey University Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship but may be tenable with other scholarships.
Applicants who apply for this scholarship and the Academy of Sport scholarship, may only receive monetary value from one scholarship.
Payment of each stipend is contingent on awardees passing all enrolled course each semester. If awardees do not pass all their enrolled courses, further stipend payment will cease.
