Purpose
The scholarship is intended to support students studying of pastoral science at postgraduate level.

Background
The John Hodgson Pastoral Science Scholarship is supported by funds accumulated under the Trade for Training Scheme established by Assoc Prof Alex Chu between 1988 and 1996. This scholarship is named after Prof John Hodgson, former Head of the Agronomy Department, Massey University, in recognition of his leadership and contribution in numerous pastoral projects conducted in China managed by Assoc Prof Chu, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Project in Guizhou Province, China.

Value and Tenure
The value of the scholarship is up to $2,500.
The scholarship is tenable for one year.

Typical Number on Offer
Typically one scholarship will be awarded per year.

Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled in a postgraduate programme studying pastoral science at Massey University.

Selection Criteria
The selection criterion is academic merit.
Other scholarships and bursaries may be taken into account in seeking an equitable distribution of funds.

Selection Committee
The scholarship is awarded by the University Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the Applied Academic Programmes Scholarships Committee, College of Sciences, in consultation with Pastoral Science staff.

Conditions of the Scholarship
The scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships, bursaries or awards, so long as these permit co-tenure. 
In recommending the award of a scholarship the selection committee may take account of other scholarships and bursaries held by the applicant with a view to achieving a reasonable distribution of available monies among qualifying candidates.
The Committee may decline to award any scholarships in any year if there are no applicants of sufficient merit to warrant an award.
At the discretion of the University all, or part, of the annual interest may be reinvested in order to maintain the value of the capital fund or the value of the award for subsequent years.
The Applied Sciences Scholarships Committee may withdraw or suspend an award at any time if the recipient fails to make satisfactory progress.
