Level of study
The Helen E. Akers Postgraduate Scholarship financially supports postgraduate agriculture and horticulture students.
This scholarship was established under the terms of the will of Helen E. Akers. It is funded from her shares in farming company, Maraekowhai Developing Company.
Value and tenure
The annual value of the scholarship is up to $3,000 and in recent years has been approximately $1,000.
The scholarship is usually awarded annually. The tenure is for a single academic year but recipients are welcome to reapply.
Typical number on offer
Fourteen scholarships are typically offered each year.
Applicants must be enrolled full time for a postgraduate degree or a postgraduate diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture or horticulture (course prefix of 111, 112, 117, 119, 138, 171, 188, 189, 239 at Massey University.
The selection criterion is academic merit.
The University Scholarships Committee may take account of other scholarships and bursaries held by the applicants in seeking an equitable distribution of funds.
The scholarship is awarded by the University Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the Applied Academic Programmes Scholarships Committee, College of Sciences.
The University Scholarships Committee has the right to refrain from making an award if there are no suitable applicants and its decision is final.
Conditions of the scholarship
The Applied Academic Programmes Scholarships Committee may withdraw or suspend an award at any time if the recipient fails to make satisfactory academic progress.
The scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships, bursaries or awards, so long as those scholarships, bursaries or awards permit co-tenure
