Plant pathogens deploy a collection of proteins and other small molecules termed effectors to facilitate infection of their prospective hosts. Dr. Mesarich's main research focus is to understand how plant-pathogenic microorganisms cause disease and/or trigger host immunity through the deployment of effector molecules, with the aim of informing disease resistance breeding programs. His research group in specifically interested in three plant pathogens that are of economic importance worldwide. These include Cladosporium fulvum and Venturia inaequalis, which cause leaf mould and scab disease of tomato and apple, respectively, as well as Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae, which causes canker disease of kiwifruit.
Dr. Carl Mesarich was appointed as a lecturer and project leader in plant pathology at Massey University in 2016. He obtained his M.Sc. (Biological Sciences) and Ph.D. (Molecular Plant Pathology) degrees from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, in 2007 and 2012, respectively. Following completion of his Ph.D., he held postdoctoral postpositions at Wageningen University, The Netherlands (Laboratory of Phytopathology, 2012–2014) and The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited, Auckland, New Zealand (Bioprotection Group, 2015).
