My job title is Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Epidemiology, and in that role direct the majority of my time towards teaching and supervising under- and post-graduate students. I teach a broad range of topics related to animal health management and evidence-based medicine, and try to provide relevant and engaging material to students at different stages of their careers.
In addition to teaching, my research interests are primarily those from my work and academic career: mastitis, reproduction, nutrition and metabolic disorders in dairy cattle. The main themes of my research experience have involved studies in commercial herds on mastitis in dairy heifers, anovulatory anoestrous and oestrous synchronisation programmes, hyperketonaemia or subclinical ketosis, and most recently, the extent and causes of culling and mortality in dairy cattle. In these studies I have used a range of analytic methods, including those suitable for hierarchical, survival and spatial data types. I am focused on providing strategies for farmers that will enhance the health, productivity and welfare of their animals.
I am a veterinary epidemiologist with a background in clinical practice and applied research. I invested my early career into clinical practice in New Zealand, mainly with production animals and increasingly with dairy cattle. I worked as a research project manager with "Cognosco" in veterinary practice in the Waikato region, and completed a a Masters of Veterinary Studies (Epidemiology) through Massey University in 2006 to equip me with the additional skills needed for that role. I joined the EpiCentre in 2017 after completing a PhD on "The epidemiology of culling and mortality of New Zealand dairy cows".
