I have always been strongly drawn to education that makes a visible difference, particularly in the lives of learners from groups under-represented in tertiary education. I have enjoyed professional development leadership and governance in the full range of tertiary settings: from founding director of a PTE through to project manager and team leader positions for government bodies and in polytechnics, wānanga and universities. I have also been responsible for learning support, and preparation for transition to university and employment, for under-prepared groups including high numbers of Māori and Pasifika learners.
I support and mentor teaching staff across the university; I also manage the team of ten learning and teaching consultants who deliver academic development to staff and learning support to students. I work with learning support and teaching staff in workshops, and individual and group consultations, collaborating with staff at different levels of responsibility. I role model, coach and mentor good practice, as well as observe practice and team teach. I design, teach, assess, create effective learning environments and incorporate the scholarship of teaching and learning in my practice, contributing substantially to the full range of teaching development “product suites” offered by Massey’s national team of CTL Teaching Consultants
