Qiao earned his PhD from La Trobe University and worked as a postdoc at the University of California before joining Massey University. Qiao supervises MSc and PhD students and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses. His research team currently works on plant protection, insect behavioral and biological control ecology, and evolutionary biology. His experience in Australia, China, NZ and USA is reflected in his > 300 publications, and work with >80 postgraduate, postdoctoral and visiting scientists from around the world. He has served as an editor of BMC Evolutionary Biology, Journal of Economic Entomology, and Zootaxa, on editorial boards of several other international journals and as a reviewer for > 60 international journals. He has sat on a number of national and international expert panels, and chaired sessions for international conferences. He was awarded the 2012 Distinguished Scientist Award by the Entomological Society of America for his outstanding contributions to entomological science during his career. Qiao has also served his university as the Chair of College of Sciences Research Committee, a member of Massey University Research Committee, and a member of Massey University PBRF Governance Group.
