Students embarking on doctoral research are usually well aware that they will have to produce a literature review but they are often unclear as to what exactly this entails. This presentation looks at the PhD literature review as an academic genre and explains the functions of the literature review in the context of your PhD.

This presentation provides valuable insight into conducting literature reviews. It offers tips and approaches to reviewing literature and how this information can inform research activity. The presentation is structured around four main sections: General Introduction to the Literature Review; Some common misconceptions; Compiling and writing the Literature Review Chapter, and; Using a synthesis matrix to help your organise your ideas.

The presentation is structured around: The emergence of journal writing historically as a research method; Common features of the research journal; Reflective writing as a kind of creative non-fiction; the impact of reflective writing on the researcher; and the solutions to common journal writing problems.
