For some years the Massey University Collective Employment Agreement (MUCEA) has had a provision allowing the employer to consider situations where staff are called upon outside their normal job requirements to use Tikanga Māori and/or Te Reo Māori skills.

Clause 4.13 of the Collective/Individual Employment Agreement was updated to recognise staff who are called upon outside their normal job requirements. A joint University, Tertiary Education Union (TEU) Working Group has been established to create a process and framework to activate the Tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori Skills clause, allowing staff to apply for the payment this year. This payment is to be administered through the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori.

The payment is not limited to Māori staff.

Mā tēnei rārangi e āhei ai tētahi utu i te takiwā o te $1000.00 me te $3000.00 (i mua i te tāke) hei whakakapi i ngā mahi kua oti i roto i te tau kua taha ake. Ko tā te utu nei he whakanui i te hunga he rite tonu te karangatia ki te kawe tikanga Māori me Te Reo Māori mō te taha ki Te Whare Wānanga.

The clause allows for an annual retrospective payment of between $1000.00 and $3000.00 gross that recognises individuals who are called on to consistently utilise Tikanga Māori and/or Te Reo Māori providing leadership on behalf of Massey University in activities and circumstances outside their job description and in addition to normal duties.

Applicants can apply on their own behalf or be nominated by a manager, supervisor or by Tikanga advisors from Massey University. Consideration will be given to:

  • Te taumata o ngā pūkenga mō te kawe Tikanga Māori me Te Reo Māori. Tirohia Appendix 1 mō ngā whakamārama o ngā taumata.

  • The competency of applicants in Tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori. See Appendix 1 for Taumata Descriptors.

  • Ehara i te mea me āhei koe te kōrero Māori, heoi me mōhio, me mātau, me mārama ki te kawe Tikanga Māori, me mōhio rānei ki te whakamahi i te reo Māori ki ngā horopaki e tika ana.

  • Whilst fluency is not essential, applicants require a good understanding of the application of Tikanga Māori and be able to utilise Te Reo Māori in situations where they are called upon to do so.

  • Te whai whakaaro ki te nui o ngā wā he rite tonu te karangatia kia whakamahia ō rātou pūkenga.

  • The regularity with which the applicant is called upon to use their skills.

Me whakatauira mai e te hunga kaitono ngā kaupapa kua whakamahia e rātau aua pūkenga kawe Tikanga Māori me Te Reo Māori.

Applicant must be able to demonstrate occasions over the period 1 Jan 2019 to 31 December 2019 where skills were utilised.

Mā Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa, mā TEU Working Group, mā ētahi māngai nō te tari o te DVCM, mā te TEU Organiser, mā Te Uepū (Māori representative of TEU), mā People and Culture, mā te Māori Language Advisory Group anō hoki tēnei utu e whakatau. Me tūmatawhāiti tēnei tukanga, ā, ka whakamōhio tika atu ki te kaitono e tēnei hunga whakatau mēnā i eke ki te pae angitu, kāre rānei i eke.

The payment is made at the discretion of Massey University and TEU Working Group which includes representatives from the Office of the DVC (Māori), the TEU Organiser, Te Uepū (Māori representative of TEU), People and Culture and the Māori Language Advisory Group. The payment and application process will be confidential, and applicants will be informed directly if they have been successful or not.

If you have provided Tikanga Māori and/or Te Reo Māori services for Massey University over the period of Jan 1 to Dec 31st, 2019, or if you wish as a manager to nominate a staff member, we encourage you to apply online no later than 5.00pm, 17 July 2020.
