What they say

Our Academy of Sport ambassadors are current and former Massey University students who have balanced their study and sporting careers with the assistance of the Massey University Academy of Sport. Hear what they have to say about studying with Massey.

Thomas Abercrombie

Thomas Abercrombie - Basketball

NZ Tall blacks, NZ BREAKERS

"My sporting career will not last forever, so I know it's important to think about life after basketball while I am still playing.

Massey has been an incredible help in this regard. My career takes me all over the world and I am constantly on the road. I chose Massey because of their great reputation and the flexibility of the distance learning programme. It allows me to study while I play, something I could not do otherwise. I believe the education I have received from Massey will put me in the best possible position to succeed and tackle whatever challenges come next."

Daniel Holt

Daniel Holt - Swimming

"When it came time to chose my tertiary education provider I considered a large number of universities. I chose Massey because it was one of the few universities that were prepared to work with me to ensure that I was able to maximise my swimming potential, whilst still studying. Whether it's getting an assessment done while I'm overseas or helping get an assignment in on time, Massey is always willing to go above and beyond to ensure my study runs smoothly when I am overseas competing. The team at Massey are always prepared to offer a solution that works for everyone."

Laura Quilter

Laura Quilter - Surf life saving and swimming

"Massey University has supported my sporting goals from day one. Not only do they facilitate students with overseas commitments, but the attitude from lecturers and staff is positive and flexible with regards to training and competing. Massey University offers an environment where I am able to excel in both my sport and academics."

Ben Langton Burnell

Ben Langton Burnell - Javelin

"Javelin throwers usually peak at around 30-32 years old. There are risks with high-intensity sport, and there is always the possibility that my competition days may end even earlier than that. So I decided that I needed to set myself up to have a career outside of competing. Massey was the obvious choice - I grew up on the farm and I decided I wanted to further my studies in agriculture. Massey is the best university in the country for agriculture and has proven to provide the best athlete support by far - it's huge. It's a win-win for me!"
